Introduction

“Tum Ik Gorakh Dhanda Ho” is a philosophically and spiritually rich poem that was written by Naz Khialvi (1947-2010), a Pakistani poet and radio broadcaster. It explores theological debates and paradoxes, such as the problem of evil, free will versus determinism, the validity of different religions, and selective divine intervention. Full of Islamic, biblical, historical, and literary references, “Tum Ik Gorakh Dhanda Ho” is a masterpiece of modern Urdu poetry.

Naz Khialvi’s real name was Muhammad Siddique. Hailing from a suburb of Faisalabad, he wrote extensively in Punjabi, though his most famous work, “Tum Ik Gorakh Dhanda Ho”, is in Urdu. As much of the poem is a complaint to God, it is thematically similar to Allama Muhammad Iqbal’s well-known “Shikwa”. At the same time, this poem would also be considered a hamd, or praise of God, for its explication of divine power.

The speaker of the poem expresses a range of emotions, including confusion, disappointment, and wonder, at the puzzling nature of God’s decisions. With sincerity, he articulates his sorrow that God allows innocent people to suffer and evildoers to prevail on earth. He also points out the apparent meaninglessness of how God will judge humans, when the latter are powerless and everything that transpires is, by definition, part of God’s plan.

Examining the abundant references in “Tum Ik Gorakh Dhanda Ho”, there are three main categories. The first group includes prophets and key religious figures: Adam, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad, and Husayn bin Ali are all mentioned. The poem alludes to miracles and incidents from their life stories. The second group consists of prominent Sufi mystics: Mansoor al-Hallaj, Shams Tabrezi, Sarmad Kashani, and Sultan Bahoo. According to tradition, the first three were executed for their heterodox beliefs. Third, the poem references the heroes and heroines of romantic folk tales from Arab, Sindhi, and Punjabi literature: Laila-Majnoon, Heer-Ranjha, Sassi-Punnu, and Sohni-Mahiwal. All of these romances are tragedies, in which the titular couples meet their end in the pursuit of love, much like Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet.

At the end of the poem, after listing his grievances, the bewildered poet begs to see just a small glimpse of the divine. That would be enough evidence for him to accept God’s existence despite all the paradoxes and dilemmas. The poem ends before explaining whether or not that wish was granted, leaving it as an open question for the reader…

The most famous rendition of “Tum Ik Gorakh Dhanda Ho” is the qawwali version by Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (1948-1997). The transcription and translation below follow his recording, which is not necessarily in the same order as Naz’s original poem. Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan also recited some extra lines from other poets, such as Mirza Ghalib (1797-1869) and Hairat Shah Warsi (1887-1963). I have delineated which parts of the text are from Naz’s poem and which are from others.

kabHi yahaaN tumheN DHoonDa kabHi vahaaN pahuncha
At times I searched for You here, at times I traveled to find You there.

tumhaari deed ki khaatir kahaaN kahaaN pahuncha
Just to catch a glimpse of Your sight, how far I have traveled!

ghareeb miT ga’e paamaal ho ga’e lekin
Similar wanderers have been wiped away and ruined, but

None have found any trace of You to this day.

ho bHi naheeN aur har ja ho
You are not, yet You are everywhere.

tum ik gorakH dHanda ho
You are an artful enigma!

har zarre meN kis shaan se tu jalva-numa hai
With much majesty, You manifest Yourself in each atom.

hairaaN hai magar aqal ke kaise hai tu kya hai
But my intellect is astonished by how you are, what you are!

tum ik gorakH dHanda ho
You are an artful enigma!

tujHe dair-o haram meN maiN ne DHoonDa tu naheeN milta
I looked for You in the temple and mosque; You cannot be found there.

magar tashreef farma tujHe apne dil meN dekHa hai
But I have seen You gracing my heart with Your presence!

tum ik gorakH dHanda ho
You are an artful enigma!

I have not found You despite searching; without searching, You appear somewhere.

aur pHir ye tamaasha hai jahaaN ham haiN vaheeN tum
And then there is this spectacle that You are wherever I am!

tum ik gorakH dHanda ho
You are an artful enigma!

When besides You, there is no second in existence,

pHir samajh meN naheeN aata tera parda karna
Then I do not understand why You veil Yourself!

tum ik gorakH dHanda ho
You are an artful enigma!

dushman to bahar-taur tHe dushman magar afsos
His enemies were, after all, enemies – but how sad it is

That You did not provide him with even a little bit of water!

har zulm ki taufeeq hai zaalim ki viraasat
The bounty for every cruelty is the inheritance of the oppressor,

mazloom ke hisse meN tasalli na dilaasa
But the oppressed is granted neither consolation nor comfort!

kal taaj saja dekHa tHa jis shakhs ke sar par
As for the person whose head was adorned with a crown yesterday,

hai aaj usi shakhs ke haatHoN meN hi kaasa
Today, I see a beggar’s bowl in the same person’s hands!

If I ask what all this is, You say in response:

is raaz se ho sakta naheeN koi shanaasa
“No one can be acquainted with this secret!”

* A maang is the line where one parts their hair. In South Asia, women often adorn it with jewelry, or if they are married, apply a red powder called sindoor to it. In this context, the metaphor is that the night is like a woman whose maang is decorated with stars as her jewelry.
